Prevention Philosophy

Prevention is defined as the proactive approach of providing support and services to families before a problem or crisis occurs rather than after. 

There are many complicated factors that contribute to child abuse. Rather than targeting these aspects, we have chosen to focus on developing certain attributes known as protective factors that, when present, are known to increase the health and well-being of children and families.

Our philosophy is that by strengthening the capacity of families to care for their children, as well as by recognizing and reducing risk factors, child maltreatment will be less likely to occur.

In addition to funding specific prevention programs, we also collaborate with organizations and communities that are interested in supporting children and reducing maltreatment by strengthening families.

Prevention Resources

Financial Support

The Children's Trust Fund is a permanent funding source for child abuse prevention.

The majority of our state and federal funds are distributed through a grant-making process in cooperation with local councils in the counties where services are provided. (currently funded programs)

Additional funds may also be used to support programs or initiatives that complement our philosophy of prevention.

Other Support

We also provide support in the form of:
  • Staff time
  • Information and resources
  • Training and technical assistance
