Overview

The State Child Abuse & Neglect Prevention Board encourages the establishment of a Certified Local Council on Child Abuse Prevention in every county. These local councils act as a network of prevention partners across the state by serving as the link between communities, Children's Trust Fund grantees and the State Board.

Only one council per county may be certified each year. Local councils are required to include representation from the following organizations:
  • Department of Human Services
  • Department of Health
  • Local law enforcement
  • Education
  • Citizen At-large, preferably someone who has participated in a family support program
Local councils may include additional members as long as the required representatives are included.

Once certified, councils may serve in one or more of the following roles:
  • collaborate with Children's Trust Fund grant applicants and other local organizations to identify program needs, effective prevention strategies, funding opportunities, etc.;
  • share information about local and statewide prevention activities; participate in local and statewide initiatives to prevent child abuse & neglect;
  • advocate for prevention as an effective means of reducing child abuse and neglect.
